What is a Widget and how can I use it

If you are a Mac user then you will know all about widgets, they are little applications that run on your computer and allow you easy access to information very quickly. For more information about widgets please go here

We have two widgets available, one for the Mac and one for the PC. Please see the revelevant section below for your computer system.

What does the FIC news widget do?

The FICM UK news widget allows you quick access to view our recent news and events listings right from your desktop. It makes use of the FIC news feed we supply in RSS format. In version 2.7 you can now search the FICM UK website right from your desktop.

What do I need

Currently you require an Apple Mac running Mac OSX 10.4 or above.

How to install

If you’re using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you’re using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. Show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

What options do I have and how do I select them

 To access the widget's preferences, hover your mouse over the FIC widget in Dashboard and a small 'i' will appear in the bottom right hand corner. Click this 'i' to display the preferences, make your choices from the drop down lists and press 'Done'. Your choices will then be loaded and stored.

Currently you require Windows XP running Konfabulator

How to install

Download the zip file to your PC and unzip the FICM_RSS widget and place it in your My Widgets folder under My Documents (Konfabulator must be installed first) Now just double click the FICM_RSS widget to open it.

What options do I have and how do I select them

The widget allows you to choose which news feed you would like to display, you have the choice of News or Events and the refresh time which tells the widget when to check for updates. You can also change the colour scheme and fonts plus a number of other options like background transparency.

To access the widget's preferences, hover your mouse over the FICM_RSS widget and right click. Select 'Widget Preferences...' from the popup menu. Make your changes and click Save when you are done.

You can also scroll a headline title if it doesn't all fit into the widget display area, simply hover your mouse over a title and after a few seconds the headline will scroll from right to left iPod style.

The widget also allows you to show the feed details. Click 'Details' in the bottom right hand corner of the widget. A details pane will appear to the right of the widget. Now just hover your mouse over a feed title and its details will be displayed in the pane.
